Project objective

A Topotheque is an online archive with free access for everyone. Individuals digitise private photos or historic documents and gather information on the historic background from people who lived at that time. Each document and photo is tagged with key words so that they can be easily found or categorised. This historic material is located on a map. The Topotheques are run by municipalities and represent an official source catalogue. Up until now there are about 170 Topotheques and some others are already in preparation.

How did citizen scientists participate?

In order to contribute, school classes were asked to digitise old photos, talk to people who still have information on the historic backgrounds, enter the data in the form and locate the photos on the map. For the Citizen Science Award 2018, school classes established a new Topotheque or work on an existing one. Their contributions had to be dedicated to one of the following topics:

  • history of the home town
  • history of the school or institution
  • family history

What happened to the contributions of citizen scientists?

All the contributed data which was digitised and located on the map became immediately visible online.

Prizes and how are winners being determined?

A jury of scientists evaluated all Topotheques which consisted of at least 50 entries using the following criteria: diversity (25%), number of entries (25%) and depth of information (50%).
