Workshop„Post-Truths, Plain Lies, and Science Communication”
Date: 24/05/2018 10:00 - 17:00
Location: Natural History Museum Vienna, Burgring 7, 1010 Vienna
An anti-science stance is becoming increasingly common all over the world: false claims, bogus theories, and pseudo-science are used to question real scientific evidence, leading to the denial of topics like climate change, vaccination benefits, and evolution.
This workshop is aimed at professionals working in science and science communication. The workshop program is a mix of theoretical and practical approaches, whereby the following topics will be covered:
1. What is the problem? A short introduction of the “post-truth” phenomenon and the factors that lead to the current trend.
2. Are we capable of reacting to it? A practical exercise to evaluate our abilities in relation to post-truth
3. Practical approaches to specific problems: participants will analyse their own practices, programmes and activities, identifying features that have potentially negative results in conveying facts; conversely, positive features will be identified and used to develop innovative ideas and approaches to avoid post-truth related pitfalls, and achieve effective science communication.
