Scavenger hunt for writing in public

Date: 20/05/2019 17:30 - 18:30
Location: University of Vienna, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Vienna

Linguistic landscapes provide information on how people understand and perceive language(s). How does it like in Austria?

The project "Deutsch in Österreich" explores the variety of the German language in Austria, how it has developed and how it is used and perceived by the public in Austria. The research will not only focus on spoken but also on written language. In public areas, in streets and places, written language is omnipresent on billboards, signs, and advertisements which reveal the use and meaning of language in society.

During the scavenger hunt, participants are invited to search for writing, language, and dialects in public areas. With the app Lingscape, photos of written language in public spheres can be uploaded with additional information.

Everyone interested can also participate in the Citizen Science Award and win non-cash prizes in the course of the linguistic scavenger hunt.

Meeting point: University of Vienna, main entrance at the  main building, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Vienna (identifying mark: orange sign with "I am DiÖ goes Lingscape").
